Go Ahead. Make My Day. Card Me.

Friday I bought a pack of cigarettes.  Not smart, I know.

The clerk was ringing me up.  She was ready to hit the final key that would prompt me to insert my card for payment, when she stopped.

She looked at me funny and said – I have carded you before, right?  You are old enough to buy cigarettes, right?

I assured her, that although my actions weren’t all that smart, I was indeed old enough to purchase cigarettes.

She was relieved and said – Oh good.  I certainly did not want to sell to someone who was underage.

Yesterday I went to the ABC store and bought a bottle of Jose Cuervo tequila.

Again, prior to hitting the final key to prompt me for payment, this clerk also asked – You are old enough to make this purchase, right?

Once again, I assured her that I was more than old enough to make the purchase and she too was thankful that she wasn’t selling to someone who was underage.

I mean, who hit the jackpot?  Um, me.  Within 72 hours I was “carded” twice!

Granted, I obviously am not all that bright based on my purchases, but I must still look young.

Now before you try to rain on my parade by pointing out that there are signs posted stating….

We Reserve the Right

I’ll take it!

After all, I am pushing 46.  So to be mistaken for a 30ish year old…I am good with that.

I mean like I am really, really, really good with that.

That is all I’ve got.

It is my birthday month so I figure I should really enjoy the gifts each day holds.

Plus, as I told my dad last night – I need to relish this because, um, it cannot go on for very much longer! hahaha

Look Out Ukrops 10k, Here I Come!

I am pretty excited… I’ll  be joining a group of lovely ladies to participle with in this year’s Ukrop’s 10k on Saturday, April 1st!

It is something I’ve tried to do annually with my girl Janie since 2011.

In 2011, I was 40 and finished the race in 1 hour, 15 minutes and 53 seconds.

In 2012, I was 41 and finished the race in 1 hour, 14 minutes and 46 seconds.

In 2015, yeah I took a couple of years off, I was 43 finished the race in 1 hour, 22 minutes and 55 seconds.

And now in 2017, because last year I broke my foot and I could not participate, I will be 4 days into my 46th year of life and my only goal is…..to complete the race! hahaha

My times might not sound like all of that, but to me they rock.

You see, each time I just up and did 6.2 miles with no training in the middle of tax season and I have remained pretty consistent through the years.

I even get up at the crack of dawn, drive 2+ hours, do the race, have lunch and drive the 2+ hours back.

Now that alone has got to be impressive! hahaha

I am not sure what this year holds due to the extra weight I am carrying courtesy of the previously mentioned broken foot last year, but if I can remain consistent, I will be over the moon!

And even if I cannot, but I at least finish the race, well, I will still be as pleased as punch and proud of myself.

I hope you sign up to do something you think you might not be able to pull off this year too, it does wonders for the soul.

Oahu Hawaii Here We Come!!

Ok. First things first.

I miss the hour I (read everyone, but I am self-centered in this department) lost when we sprang forward.

So totally down with the fall back version.

It is now 10am on Sunday.

Rats.

I need more down time! hahaha

Second things second.

Yesterday I was to run/walk the Rock ‘n Roll half marathon in DC.

Originally it was the marathon to celebrate the end of being 44 and ushering in being 45.

Then I scaled back to a half because I wasn’t honestly training to complete another marathon.

Yes I said another because I have at least completed one marathon in my life time and like to insinuate woo hoo me.

But marathons are no joke.

The training and hours it takes to pull one off plus the marathon itself, yikes.

Now I didn’t bag the half yesterday because I couldn’t physically do it.

Nope. I have been Fitbit racing a 23 year old quite healthy and active young man for the last month.

Although mama lost each time, mama got as close as she could and pushed herself right well.

No. I didn’t do the half because, OMG, what a pain in the butt (read ass) it would have been to get my package and get to the race.

I knew from the start – don’t do this – I don’t like big races in DC because it is too much trouble to get there.

Note to self – listen to that voice that says, um no, pick something else.

I even had a beautiful and kind friend willing to mill around DC for up to 4 hours just to accompany me into DC and get me to the race.

Small problem.

They wouldn’t mail the race items to me.

“Open House” to pick up the race items was Thursday and Friday in DC.

For me, it was a 40 minute trek ONE WAY to leave work to pick up my race stuff and then another 40 minutes to get back to work, um, during tax season.

Not counting how much time it would take to grab my stuff, nor if there was traffic either to or from.

Screw that.

Instead. To usher in my 45th year on this planet, same said beautiful and kind friend and I hiked a pretty tough trail at Great Falls (at least 4 miles)!

We then enjoyed a pretty yummy Mexican lunch and got a mani and pedi.

Plus I got an eyebrow waxed.

SA-WEET and HAPPY ENDING OF 44 TURNING 45 INDEED!

Icing on the cake?

I am headed to Oahu, Hawaii this Christmas with my sister and her family.

Mama is finally gonna get to surf with her niece!!

I have waited 13 years for this event!

Hello love, I have been waiting for you!

So happy and so cool with missing my half now.

45 and surfing in Hawaii baby, SO DAMN COOL!

Happy March People!

Hello 43 Turning 44

This morning I woke up and said – Happy Birthday.

And then I said – ooooooow!

Can we say effin’ sore?

Yes we can, and we just did!

I am going to need to soak in a hot bath before I go into work.

Yes I said go into work on a Sunday, and on a Sunday which also happens to be my birthday.

Having yesterday off was such a wonderful gift!

What did I do with my first day off in a while?

I drove down to Richmond and did a 10k. No biggie. hahaha

It is something that I like to do with a great friend I have known since 1994.

Wow, that’s 21 years.

WOW, that REALLY sucks!

Not the 21-year-old friendship, no, I am talking about the 21 years that have passed!!!!! Damn.

Any who, back to the positive news.

I have done the Ukrops 10k with her 3 times. This was the first time we stuck together because neither of us had the time of day to train.

She is usually a good 5-7 minutes faster than me.  But she is also younger than me and I smoke….hey, I am just trying to find reason to make my ego feel better.

Anyway, here is what I have managed to pull off in the past with a I just wanna complete this as best as I can but I am not competitive nor will I kill myself trying to get across the finish line mentality:

2011 – Age 40 – 1 hr 15 min 53 sec

2012 – Age 41 – 1 hr 15 min 46 sec

And yesterday, in the extreme bitter cold (I think that was one of the coldest races I have ever done and I must say – I AM NOT A FAN!!!):

2015 – one day shy of 44 – 1 hr 22 min 55 sec

It took me 7 minutes longer this year with z-e-r-o training.

Well I did get on the treadmill once, which obviously didn’t help much! hahaha

I also have been working 7 days a week for the last 3 ½ to 4 weeks, and many of those days have been 12 to 13 hours…..so, I am cutting this old lady some slack even if you don’t, and again I am just trying to soothe my ego.

Here are my stats from yesterday and they are pretty damn decent for a non-training, hard-working, had to drive 2hrs to get there old bird like me….

OMFG! When Is Winter Leaving?

I don’t know how the winter is going in your neck of the woods, but in mine, Holy Cow winter needs to move right along now!

As in goodbye, adios, see you later!!

Thursday our area was hit with snow, like an all day freakin’ snow.

And yes it is pretty, and it does seem to quiet life down for a little while.

Unless you are a newscaster, weather person, or snowplower, and then you are pulling 18+ hour shifts.

But hey, you signed up for that, I didn’t.

I really dislike snow when it happens during the work week.

And no, I am not clambering to get to work for the joy of it, although I do enjoy my job.

Tax season is underway, and it makes life a whole lot easier when I can get to and from work easily without fear, worry or concern.

Who needs that kind of stress on top of tax season stress?

Well it snowed so much on Thursday that I had to take a co-worker’s offer up to pick me up Friday morning.

I really didn’t want to, but only because picking me up was 50 minutes out of his way.

We agreed that he would pick me up at 7:45am since we were aiming to get to work by 8:45am, when the office opened.

Well along his travels I kept getting updated timetables – make that I’ll be to your place by 8am, then 8:15am and then….it keeping going until I received the final message at 9:02am….I should be there in 8 minutes.

That was my cue to tie things up and go wait for him outside.

And I waited and I waited, all the while freezing my ass off.

Seriously, my fingers went numb.

He texted me and said – Ok, I am sitting outside the leasing office here at blah, blah, blah Drive. Where are you?

Me – Um, I am freezing my ass off at blah, blah, blah CIRCLE!! You know, the address I sent you last night?!

Ok, so I wasn’t that rude, but I did tell him, um it’s blah, blah, blah CIRCLE.

And I did really say, dude I am freezing my ass off!! hahaha

While waiting during my 1 hour and 15 minute delayed pick up, I did do something productive.

I played with my cell phone trying to get a good selfie.

I don’t know how people can take good selfies.

I have been trying forever.

I would just like a few good pics of myself to freeze this point in time, no pun intended, so when I am 105 I can remember that once upon a time, sometimes, I had it going on!

I’d prefer to capture it in a selfie because I don’t want to have to go up to co-workers, friends and family and say, hey do mind taking a picture of me? Why? Um, just because. hahaha

So I think I finally captured a good pic or two that I will share in a moment.

Because first, I want to share with you something else that I discovered by way of mistake, as in I hit something on my computer and taa daa, I had a slide show of all the pictures I have taken over the years.

That was pretty cool.

And here is how good I am with discovering stuff, because for some reason as of late I am getting pretty darn good at it with anything that has to do with technology.

I noticed a small crescent looking moon symbol on my iPhone and thought, uh oh.

What if I pressed something that is charging me through the nose for something that I am not even using? What the hell does that thingy mean and why is it on my phone???

So I took my phone to the expert in the office, the 23-year-old receptionist and said, Help!!

Easy peasy she took my phone fixed it and said, You had your Do Not Disturb on.

Greaaaat. I’d be missing calls and texts (cuz now I am so hip and happening that I finally text), and be none the wiser if I hadn’t noticed that something on my screen looks a tiny weeny bit different.

So the moral of the story is…I accidently touch things on technical items and learn something new every day usually by SURPRISE!!!

Now back to the slide show because this was a very good surprise.

I am aging very nicely.

And by this I mean, slowly.

Thank God!

Check out my discovery, and if you don’t agree, keep it to yourself and don’t burst my bubble! hahaha

An old lady has got to have a dream!!

Speaking of which, later this month I am turning 44.

And I am cool with that until I think….Holy Bleeping Hell!!!! I am only 6 years and a few days away from turning the Big 5.0.

That is just too much to handle so back to my slowly aging dream that keeps me grounding in the I am not 50 yet baby(!!!):

My last thoughts on this winter and freezing my ass off yesterday, which obviously I did or I wouldn’t keep repeating it!

Well, it wasn’t so bad now that I can see just how much (as in not much at all) I have changed over the last 10 years.

Thank you Old Man Winter.

Now get the hell out!!! hahahaha

Eight Years Later, Coming Full Circle

One really cool thing about birthdays is receiving well wishes from all of the people you have known in your life, whether it be by way of a card, a call, a facebook message or an email.

I particularly like the well wishes I received from boyfriends past.

It is nice to know that they still think well of me, because I still think well of them.

It’s kind of neat receiving happy birthday wishes from your very first boyfriend who you still think is HOT! Or your two high school boyfriends, who were and are such great guys and played a big role in earlier years. Or even your last boyfriend, one of the two men, I actually thought of marrying.

All of these dude have since gone on, gotten married and have children.

And I am happy for them, because I was kinda skeptical about the marriage thing and I most definitely was not on the having kids band wagon.

I’ll stick with being an aunt!

But these well wishes got me thinking…..it has been 8 years since my last boyfriend.

Holy crap! 8 years!!

See, I tend to stick with people for a long time, and then I tend to take a long time off in between.

But 8 years is kinda pushing it. hahaha

About a year and a half ago, I finally decided to let a friend hook me up on a blind date.

I remember meeting him for the first time and thought, Holy cow you hooked me up with grandpa!

He had the same reaction and said something when I was out of the room, What did you do…rob the cradle? I can’t date a twenty something year old!!

He was only 50, but for me, I wasn’t ready to go there yet. hahaha

I remember talking to my mom and sister about it, But he’s 50!!!

To which they replied, But honey, you are in your 40s.

And I was like, Yeah, but I don’t look it!!!!

In all fairness, he really was a nice guy and we hung out a few times. But I wasn’t attracted to him. I really wanted to remain friends because I enjoyed his company, but he already had a lot of girls who were friends, so that didn’t work out so well either.

Anyhow, the moral of the story is, I’d like to meet someone new since it has been, um 8 years.

For me the friendship is always the best thing to build on first.

So may my meeting new friends begin now!

That’s my birthday wish for this year.

And yes, hopefully this is the last time I will mention my birthday, until next year!! hahaha

It’s Raining On My Birthday

Like really raining.

Like all day long raining raining.

And it is perfect.

Because it is the perfect excuse to take a nap for two hours, get up for fifteen minutes, and then roll over and take another two hour nap!

And that’s how I roll on my first day off in a month, but still went into work this morning for three hours because I can’t seem to get enough of tax season and seem to be crazy.

If it is raining where you are…..I hope you enjoy it with a nap!
